Designed for students who already have at least Intermediate (B1) level of English.

Academic Programme

  • 20 hours' tuition per week including English, STEM, Young Entrepreneur and Presentation Skills (16 hours), Winchester City Challenge (3 hours), Excursion Preparation (1 hour)

English - 4 Hours

Enhance core skills and technical accuracy while boosting fluency through engaging, collaborative activities.

 

Communication Challenges

Build clear, confident communication skills through discussions and problem-solving tasks - in English - on topics relevant to you. Use mind-mapping to organise ideas, expand vocabulary, and develop persuasive speaking and writing techniques.

 

Interactive Language Activities

English lessons follow a communicative, hands-on approach. Pair work, group tasks, and role-plays help you practise grammar and vocabulary naturally while improving fluency and accuracy in a fun, supportive environment.

 

Study Skills

Develop essential academic skills, including effective note-taking, active listening, and simple research techniques. Regular opportunities to present your work boost confidence and help you become a clear, engaging speaker.

Young Entrepreneur - 4 Hours

Build essential business and entrepreneurial skills: explore product life cycles to identify target markets, create compelling brand identities, and develop effective marketing strategies.

 

Leadership Dynamics

Examine leadership models and research influential leaders. Understand your own strengths, enhance your understanding of team dynamics, and improve your leadership capabilities.

 

Product Development

Brainstorm product ideas and conduct market research to determine your niche. Compile your findings for presentation, sharing your understanding of market demands and business concepts.

 

Digital Advertising

Use digital tools (e.g. iMovie and Audacity) to create impactful visual or audio advertisements. Employ persuasive language and storytelling techniques to produce compelling marketing materials. Present your product to the school and compete for the title of Entrepreneur of the Week!

Presentation Skills - 4 Hours

Develop essential presentation skills crucial for academic and future success. Build confidence through challenging activities that enhance public speaking and critical thinking abilities.

 

Analyse Famous Speeches

Examine famous speeches on contemporary topics to understand their structure and effectiveness. Develop and deliver quick-fire speeches to the class, ensuring each presentation is concise, well-structured, and expertly delivered.

 

Develop Debating Skills

Cultivate effective debating skills while promoting respectful discourse. Explore what makes a successful debate and establish the rules for constructive discussions. Participate in a class-wide debate on topics that interest you, justifying your position with clear reasoning.

 

Prepare a Business Pitch

Deliver a convincing and engaging business pitch while effectively responding to detailed questions from a panel of your classmates. Understand what constitutes a good pitch and the techniques employed by successful presenters.

STEM - 4 Hours

Collaborate on practical tasks which integrate science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. Design and conduct experiments, apply scientific concepts, and develop innovative solutions.

 

Bridge Making

Construct a bridge, applying engineering principles such as tension and compression. Evaluate load-bearing capacities and assess your bridge's performance under weight tests.

 

Circuit Making

Build simple circuits with batteries and components like resistors and LEDs. Use Ohm's Law to analyse voltage and current readings. Troubleshoot design issues as you deepen your understanding of electrical principles.

 

Science of Survival

Explore survival techniques by harnessing solar energy through constructing a solar oven and developing ways to purify water. Learn map reading and navigation skills to orient yourself and put your skills to the test.

Winchester City Challenge (3 hours per week)
  • Visit Winchester with your teacher - discover ancient historical sights, visit museums and galleries and enrich your understanding of British Culture. You'll be amazed at how much you grow in confidence as you practise your English with friendly residents.

Excursion Preparation (1 hour per week)
  • Each week students take part in a 1 hour interactive excursion-preparation class. The activities are designed to introduce students to the history, culture, and key features of the destination they will visit on their excursion.
  • Students may take part in themed role-plays or complete a location-based scavenger hunt that encourages teamwork, curiosity, and real-world learning.
  • These hands-on sessions help students connect with the place before they arrive, making the excursion more meaningful, engaging, and memorable.
Accommodation and Supervision
  • Boarding houses are situated a short walk from the main campus
  • Students on the English Plus+ and Global Young Leaders programmes share boarding houses, activities and excursions
  • Comfortable bedrooms with 1 - 6 beds and shared bathrooms. Winchester is an historic, traditional school, so do not expect 5-star accommodation!
  • Close supervision at all times
  • Resident House Parents look after you throughout your stay
  • 3 meals a day. A healthy range of food to suit international students
  • Restricted access to mobile phones. WiFi available (at specific times).

Activity Programme Details
  • Afternoons: Wide choice of activities including a range of sports, art & design, dance & movement, British games
  • Evenings: Exciting evening activities include leadership challenges, mystery nights, talent shows, quiz nights, relaxed games nights in house and discos
  • Special events: Ceilidh (traditional dancing), archery
  • Excursions: 2 excursions perweek e.g. Thorpe Park, Southampton, London, Oxford, Portsmouth
  • Supervised free time in Winchester: Explore the city sights and vibrant high street
  • PLUS: Lots of opportunities to practise English with our English Student Hosts.
