Is it possible to prepare for IELTS on a residential summer course?

Joining a residential summer school is an ideal way to build confidence in your spoken and written English while learning more about British Culture, taking part in a varied activity programme and meeting new friends.
Our range of exam options offer students the opportunity to focus their studies by preparing for an internationally recognised English language exam. Students on our English Plus programmes at Benenden, Shrewsbury and Winchester can prepare for and take the Trinity GESE exam while those on our Pre-University programme can prepare for the IELTS exam. They can choose to take the IELTS exam on 17 July or 31 July 2025. This is subject to availability and at extra cost of approx. £280 (GBP) – including exam fees, payable to the exam centre, and travel expenses.
What is IELTS?
IELTS (International English Language Testing System) is a popular English language proficiency test for higher education. If you are applying to an English-speaking university programme in the future, it is likely you will need this qualification.
Who can take this programme?
Our Pre-University programme takes place in historic Winchester College and is designed for 15-17 year old international students.
This programme is suitable if
- You have an Upper Intermediate (B2) level of English
- You are planning on applying to an English-speaking university programme
- You are returning to Discovery Summer Winchester and would like to challenge yourself with a new Major
- You want to develop your academic English skills e.g. essay writing, reading and listening techniques
What is my level of English?
English levels are measured against the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. Contact our friendly team if you are unsure of your level. Following a brief diagnostic, we will suggest the most suitable summer programme and exam option for you. If we would like to find out more, we can arrange a brief online ‘diagnostic’ session with our Academic Manager.
What will I learn on a two-week IELTS preparation course?
- You’ll find out what examiners are looking for and develop your academic essay writing skills
- You can take part in optional weekly mock tests under exam conditions to focus your studies
- We offer you detailed weekly feedback to help you boost your scores
- You can also choose from a range of Minor subjects e.g. Debate, IELTS speaking & listening to complement your studies

Can I take the exam at the end of the two-week preparation course?
- If you are over 16 years of age, you can register to take the IELTS exam if you want. The exam takes place at an IELTS exam centre in London on 17 July or 31 July 2025. It’s subject to availability and there’s an extra cost of approx. £280 which includes the exam fee (which you pay direct to the exam centre) and travel expenses. Don’t worry – Discovery Summer staff will accompany you to the exam and look after you on the day.
- Even if you decide not to take the exam, you can join the IELTS preparation Major and Minor – you will be developing important academic English skills for the future as you study alongside English teenagers
