Top 10 Things To Do in London with Kids This Summer 2026
Last updated: May 2026
Once again, families from all over the world are travelling to London to study English with Discovery Summer in June, July and August.
One of the best ways to practise and improve your English is by getting out and exploring the city. London is one of the best cities in the world for family activities, packed with exciting, educational, and unforgettable experiences for children of all ages.
From outdoor adventures to magical experiences, here’s our updated guide to the top 10 things to do in London with kids this summer – perfect for families visiting London for summer school.
1. Enjoy an Outdoor Cinema or Theatre Experience
After a morning of English classes in Collingham’s impressive Victorian building in the heart of London, it’s time for some fresh air. Throughout the summer months, outdoor cinemas pop up across London’s parks and rooftops. Offering a magical experience for families, who can enjoy a relaxed afternoon or evening together.
Our top recommendation? The Outdoor Cinema Kew Gardens – the most magical botanical gardens in a UNESCO World Heritage site. Why not combine culture with nature?
This summer, they are playing classics like Jurassic Park and Pride and Prejudice. Alternatively, watch a live theatre performance at Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre.

2. Relax in London’s Parks and Outdoor Spaces
Despite being known for its rainy weather, London comes alive with the sunshine! The city’s green spaces are perfect for picnics, games, and outdoor fun.
One of our favourite parks is Richmond Park – an impressive open landscape where you can spot wild deer! Students on our Marymount Day Course will also be visiting this amazing green space to get some exercise and learn about nature.
Another top location is Battersea Park – a great choice for those looking for a more adventurous space. Students on our Collingham Full Day programmes for 13-17s also visit the park to try out mini-golf and ride a variety of fun bikes. If you want a more local, but just as famous option – you can always go to Kensington Gardens or Hyde Park – not too far from Collingham.

3. Explore a museum
Going to a museum can be an exciting way to spend a couple of hours. The weekly museum visits are a highlight for our Collingham junior students aged 7 and above who go to the Natural History Museum, Science Museum, Design Museum or V&A in South Kensington. It’s a great way to boost their English skills and inspire their projects.
London has over 200 museums – offering a wide range of free permanent exhibitions as well as one-time experiences – make sure you include at least one or two in your itinerary!
- Explore Stop-motion animation in the iconic characters of Wallace & Gromit at the Young V&A
- Go underground and explore the unseen parts of London with the Hidden London Underground Tours or a visit to the London Transport Museum.
Visit the London Museum in the Docklands to learn about the history of the beautiful riverside! The museum is free for all and they often have additional activities just for families!

4. Take a boat trip!
Did you know that London is built on over 20 hidden “lost rivers” that were buried underground? Well why not take an unforgettable boat ride through these famous waters?
For families studying English with us at our London summer school we arrange an optional weekly social programme. In 2026 there’ll be opportunities to take the Westminster River Boat Cruise. Tickets are very reasonably priced at £9.25-£13.95 and can be purchased on arrival. Another great option is a canal boat ride in Little Venice! This boat ride takes you through Camden Market, Regents Park and London Zoo.

5. See London from a different perspective
You have been in the water now, why not take to the sky?
Glide over the River Thames for stunning views of the city with the IFS Cloud Cable Car. This short but exciting journey is always a hit with kids!
A classic, but always a success is the London Eye! Our 8-13 year old Marymount residential students will be enjoying a weekend trip to this London icon. Lastly, another great way to see London is from the beautiful hills where you can get impressive views or catch the sunset. Visit Primrose Hill in Regent’s Park or Parliament Hill Viewpoint in Hampstead Heath for truly breathtaking views of the capital.

6. Visit the Theatre
Also included in our optional Collingham summer school family social programme is a trip to the theatre. London has over 240 theatres across the city so there’s something for everyone! Some great venues in London include the National Theatre or Shakespeare’s Globe. And for musical lovers there are always classics playing in the West End, from the Lion King to Matilda.

7. Get a taste from around the globe
London is one of the world’s most culinarily diverse cities, featuring roughly 123 distinct cuisines so make sure you try something new! From the incredible street food and markets to high-end cuisine, London has a bit of everything. We all know that sharing food is the best way to connect with loved ones, meet new friends and share experiences. On our optional Collingham social programme we offer regular dinners for families at a local pizza restaurant. It’s a great way to practise your English whilst making friends with other international students.

8. Have a magical “Harry Potter” experience
Step into the wizarding world and bring your favourite stories to life right here in London.
Start by exploring famous filming locations around the city, from hidden alleyways to iconic landmarks that inspired scenes from the films. You can even visit King’s Cross Station and snap a photo at Platform 9¾!
For the ultimate experience, take a trip to Warner Bros. Studio Tour London, where you can walk through real sets, see original costumes, and discover how the magic was created behind the scenes.

9. Have a Royal London Experience
Step into the world of kings, queens, and royal traditions, something you can only truly experience in London.
Start with the famous Changing of the Guard at Buckingham Palace, where children can watch the soldiers in their iconic red uniforms and bearskin hats. Then head to the historic Tower of London, where history comes to life. We love this iconic landmark, which is why we are taking our 8-16 year old Benenden students there this summer. Kids love seeing the Crown Jewels, meeting the legendary Beefeaters, and spotting the famous ravens.

10. Visit a Castle or a Palace
Still feeling like royalty? Why not visit some of England’s royal palaces or castles! We love a castle and so do our students which is why we incorporate trips to some amazing British castles as part of our residential courses for 8-17 year olds.
A short walk from Collingham, you can visit Kensington Palace or take a look at the historical Leighton House and Samboune House.
From London you can also take a day trip to places like Hampton Court Palace, Hever Castle or Windsor Castle by train.
A great way to make new friends is by joining a small group sightseeing tour organised by International Friends who offer day trips to Warner Bros Studio Tour London – The Making of Harry Potter, Stonehenge, Windsor Castle and many more.
